Emily took a lot of persuasion from me to keep her session date. She had gained about 15 pounds and was just certain she was going to look fat in her portraits. After many emails back and forth, I convinced her to let me try…if she didn’t like the outcome, well then she didn’t have to purchase any.

During the planning of her session, Emily confessed she’s a huge Batman fan, so with a bit of brainstorming (and the addition of the studio’s sheer cape), we came up with an outfit to pay tribute to her favorite super hero.
How long have you been wanting to do a boudoir/contemporary glamour session and what made you decide now was the time to do one?
I’ve been wanting to do this for about two-three years. I decided to do something for ME!

What made you decide Shannon Hemauer was the photographer to work with to do your boudoir/contemporary glamour session?
I read your bio and looked over your photos and felt that you are really talented and professional. And also felt the importance of you being a female American Veteran.
What was your favorite part out of the entire experience? The planning, the session, the reveal?
The entire experience was a blast…from getting the initial phone call from Shannon, to planning my outfits—over and over again—to the emailing my many questions back/forth to Shannon. The day of the shoot was so exciting and fun.
Did you leave your session worried about your hair/makeup (Maybe you thought the makeup was too dark or your hair didn’t look like you.)?
I left a little concerned that I didn’t completely look like myself, but Shannon reassured me that the pictures would look much different than what I looked like in person.

Did you leave your session worried that the posing felt awkward?
No, I had fun with the posing after the first 2-3 times.
What were you more nervous about–the session or the reveal?
The session, mostly because of my weight gain and I didn’t know how I would look in my outfits.
Did you arrive to the reveal worried if you’d like your images?
I was a little nervous but not really worried. Shannon had already reassured me enough that my photos would look great!
What did you think when you saw that first image of yourself?
Honestly I almost cried! I was so happy and so surprised. I had absolutely NO idea that I could ever look that beautiful and that my photos would actually look that awesome…completely speechless.
If you had been worried about the hair/makeup/posing, did you like what you saw in your portraits?
My mind was completely set at ease! I looked so natural.
How did shooting this session with Shannon Hemauer change your outlook on yourself? Are you more confident?
I felt great about my decision to do the shoot (regardless of everyone asking me “why are you doing a photoshoot just for yourself‘?”). I am more confident with myself and how I can look in pictures and therefore in real life.

Before this experience, did you feel you were photogenic? If no, do you feel you are photogenic now?
I don’t think that I am very photogenic, mostly because I am not that comfortable at this time with myself due to recent weight gain and the trouble with my teeth discoloration (so I don’t like to smile big).
Before this experience, what concerns did you have in regards to hiring a photographer?
I don’t think that I have ever really considered hiring a photographer. I’ve never needed one for any reason.
Were you surprised at how much fun you had planning your session, shooting your session, and seeing your images?
I’m not too surprised, I like planning things and doing things like this—mostly it has always been planning things for other people though, once I get started sometimes I can just get going and go overboard. I had a great time planning out the outfits and the session and then waiting for the reveal was almost agonizing! But I made and WOW they are awesome!
Why should other women do a boudoir/contemporary glamour session with Shannon Hemauer Photography?
Because even with Shannon’s extremely busy schedule she is on the ball with every client with emails, reminders, the sessions, reveals, etc! Shannon made me feel extremely comfortable from start to finish, wouldn’t let me quit when I wanted too, and made the session so much fun. She is very professional yet so very honest and nice.
